In 1453, when Fatih Sultan Mehmethan conquered İstanbul, this beautiful building gained the status of a mosque after the first Friday prayer Fatih Sultan Mehmethan performed with his army on the third day of the conquest. He dedicated the mosque with this first congregational prayer in Aya Sofya and established the Fatih Complex and the Aya Sofya Waqf.
