P.C. Suppiah is a modest man. But he was a sensation in his time. He amazed his fellow runners in the Munich Olympics of 1972 when he ran barefoot in the 10,000 meters, a gruelling race. It was also in Munich that he became the first Singaporean to run the event in under 32 minutes. Suppiah is from the generation of Singapore athletes in the 1960s and 1970s who achieved so much with so little. Like Chee Swee Lee, C. Kunalan, Glory Barnabas, K. Jayamani and others. From the sprints to long distance events, each of their national records held for a few decades. They trained on a bitumen track in the evenings, after work. Their coaches were dedicated, but they had little technical support and facilities. What they had was the X factor, that light of sheer grit and devotion to the sport that shined. Suppiah could not afford running shoes when he was young, and made it his style to run barefoot. It took four decades for his 10,000m record to be broken, by Soh Rui Yong, who went on to break the records in a few other long distance events as well. I was happy to meet P.C. Suppiah together with Minister (MCCY) Edwin Tong at the launch of the SportSG exhibition and book on 50 years of sporting luminaries and the development of Singapore sports. He is 72 years, still looking the athlete. (The first shot of him: on the Sports magazine cover in Nov 1972, when he was hailed as Sportsman of the Year.) We met him together with Maisarah Hassan, our para-athlete who holds the national record for the women's 100m T36 race. Our best years in sports are ahead of us. We now have far better support for our sportspersons, in schools and nationally, including opportunities for the most promising sportspersons to train full-time. And solid plans for the future, as Minister Edwin Tong spoke about yesterday. We must also rekindle that grit and determination of the earlier generation, in our new generation of sportspersons. And help them sustain their passion through their 20s and early 30s, and be well-prepared for their subsequent careers, so they don’t need to give up sports for the sake of career. It can be done, as Shanti Pereira and others are showing us. #RespectForAll #LiveBetterThroughSport #VisionsforChange #OurSportsHeritage Photo credit to MCCY
