Trains in Europe: From Best to Worst I’ve taken many trains in different countries across Europe. Here’s my ranking of the best and worst countries when it comes to train travel. I didn’t include every country I’ve visited, only the ones that left a strong impression on me (both positive and negative). Let’s go from best to worst. Austria – 9/10 The best trains in Europe, in my opinion, are in Austria. They’re always on time, incredibly comfortable, and relatively affordable compared to neighboring countries. Italy – 8.5/10 Italian trains are expensive but very comfortable. In first class, you even get free snacks and drinks. Switzerland – 8/10 Swiss trains are extremely comfortable, but the main selling point is the breathtaking scenery you get to enjoy along the way. Lithuania – 7.5/10 Perhaps the biggest surprise on the list is Lithuania. It’s a very well-connected country with comfortable and affordable trains. Slovenia – 7/10 Another Eastern European country. Slovenian trains are great. Clean, cheap, and reasonably comfortable. Romania – 6/10 Romanian trains are decent overall. I had a few bad experiences with overbooked trains, but generally they’re fine. France – 5.8/10 French trains are quite comfortable but very expensive. I haven’t taken many of them, but one time I did, a passenger was arguing with the conductor because he didn’t have a ticket. Serbia – 5.5/10 Serbian trains are average in terms of comfort. Once, I took a train from Belgrade to Niš, a direct connection between the capital and the third-largest city, and it stopped around 40 times. It was horrible. Germany – 5/10 Yes, Deutsche Bahn makes the list. German trains are comfortable, everyone knows that. But they’re almost always delayed… Croatia – 4/10 In Croatia, your train is often replaced by a bus. And when it’s not, you’ll probably get a very old Yugoslav-era train. It’s cool as a one-time experience, but not much more than that. Unfortunately, many of the beautiful coastal cities aren’t connected by train. #traintravel #europe #europetravel #travel #trains
