This is an extension of @Justin Scott ‘s thinkpiece on the overuse of the word “pause”. Full Words Here: Heard a classmate say a simple sentence that couldn’t be interpreted in any way that would associate him with queerness but he still said “pause” before continuing and I’ve been thinking about this for days now in the sense that if “pause” is part of your vocabulary it’s a clear indication that you are being controlled by fear by way of whiteness. And to go even further it’s an indication that fear is directly tied to your politic and this controls how you move in our social world. Like when “pause” is in your lexicon it shows that your brain is hyper correcting itself so much to the point that you can’t even come up with words to form sentences without thinking about the hyper masculine social contract that straight men are subjected to and that you signed off on. You can’t even formulate thoughts and opinions without this creeping thought of said thoughts and opinions being interpreted as “gay” or as “queer”. And there’s major past and present historical contexts that socialize black men to be this way but what I’m really trynna get at is the pure sadness and tradegy of it all. Because when you do this it becomes an unconscious and conscious active choice to just straight up dehumanize yourself cause you refuse to distance yourself from homophobia because you were taught and socialized to truly believe in hyper masculinity as a good framework to live your life. So it’s not only that it’s immature and shows how much insecurity you have, but it’s also tragic because it’s part of your mental conditioning and while it’s hard to break free from that, it’s not impossible. I was socialized to have that same conditioning but I broke away from it by way of deconstructing respectabillity politics which is one of the main reasons why and how black people police ourselves so much to the extent that we do. And I also asked myself why was I using “gay” as a way to describe negative things and why was I saying words like “pause” to get into friend groups, receive male validation from my peers, and not be perceived as gay or weird by said in group. So if you want to engage in the same deconstruction that I engaged in you must ask these questions for yourself and put in the mental work to find the answers to said questions or else you’ll be controlled by fear for the rest of your life…#fyp #foryoupage #pause
