I was reading this article in Forbes that said over half of Americans don’t take paid time off because they’re afraid to. This is why I hate the “unlimited PTO” policy. I never bought into it. Most of the time (not all), this is not as sexy as it sounds because you’re still only taking enough time off relative to what everyone else is taking too. Depending on the culture where you work, that may be just a couple of weeks a year, if that. Also 57% said a mental health day isn’t a good enough reason to take a day off. EXCUUUUUUSE ME? Many of them were afraid of being judged for taking a mental health day. I get that part. I used all my sick days at my previous jobs, I just didn’t tell them anything more than “I have a doctor’s appointment.” Federal law prohibits an employer from asking you any more information about your appointment. They can ask for a doctor’s note, and I think that’s a really shitty policy. Point is, even if we didn’t have all these hoops to jump through I still think a lot of people would not take all their days off out of fear of losing their job, which is super toxic. We shouldn’t be afraid to take advantage of our employee benefits! That’s why they’re there. Just another reason to get educated about your money so you can have more power to walk away from toxic workplaces like these. #pto #corporateamerica
