@learningwithkaitlin: Gloop is such a staple in sensory explorations allowing for ultimate child agency. Inviting children to be the cultivators of their own learning while they explore, make sense and test out their working theories in order to further understand their world as a whole. Is it hot or cold? Hard or soft? What happens if I add sand in or moosh it like this? These moments of testing and uncovering invite your children to recognise themselves as the capable and competent human beings that they are! Sensory based experiences such as this also allow for an abundance of learning opportunities through the stimulation of all of their different senses which in turn foster their language and brain development and cognition (Gascoyne, 2016).  It has also been discovered that sensory play is an incredible tool in emotional regulation. As humans we all have emotions that can seem and feel overwhelming at times and as children this is their experience tenfold. Everything is so new, each experience and moment that they encounter— so when these turmoils of emotions do come up it can really spill over in so many ways. In behaviours that are often labelled as ‘naughty’ or ‘troubled’ it’s often just a very big indicator that your child is struggling, overstimulated and needs your help to co-regulate back to normal. There will be times where they might say that they don’t want this help. But they do really need it-- even if they don’t see it. This is why I’ve come up with and would really love to share with you a physical way that your child can be invited to re-regulate and get back to neutral. In a way where you can be present in this process or where you are able to sit from afar or just give them the agency to do so in their own time and space. “Sensory regulation involves integrating and adjusting sensory input and managing arousal levels, attention, and emotional responses. Sensory regulation significantly influences our ability to self-regulate and adapt to our environment. Whether it's feeling the comforting warmth of a blanket or engaging with the sounds around us, sensory regulation enables us to filter, interpret, and adapt to our surroundings. By achieving sensory regulation, we lay the foundation for overall well-being and self-regulation.” – Prendiville (Sensory Play Therapy). So here it is; All you need is some cornflour, water, dye and something that your child can use to smash and break apart the gloop (I used some wooden playdough instruments). All you need to do is combine two cups of cornflour to a cup of water plus a little dye and mix. What’s great about this experience is that you can utilise old gloop that’s gone hard! You can leave this in a bowl to dry or for optimal results let your gloop set in a play tray! It should be hard to touch. Place it with your wooden playdough toys and then your bubba can smash, break and explore their heart away. The perfect play opportunity and the perfect way to re-regulate. I hope you enjoy and that this can be used as a fun redirection in your home!
