Aruna Shanbaug was 25 years old, newly engaged and looking forward to getting married when her entire future was taken away. It was November 1973, and Aruna worked as a nurse at KEM Hospital in Mumbai, India. She loved her profession and was preparing to begin a new chapter with the doctor she planned to marry. But on the evening of November 27, something terrible happened inside the very hospital where she spent her days caring for others. Aruna was changing after her shift when a hospital cleaner named Sohanlal Walmiki attacked her. He wrapped a dog chain around her neck, restrained her and sexually assaulted her, according to accounts of the case. The chain was pulled so tightly that oxygen could no longer reach her brain properly. Then he left her there. Aruna was discovered the following morning. She was alive, but the damage was devastating. The young nurse who had been preparing for her wedding could no longer speak, walk or care for herself. Her brain had suffered severe, irreversible damage. And what makes this case even more heartbreaking is that Aruna would remain in that condition for nearly 42 years. The man responsible was arrested, but the punishment he received would become another painful part of her story. Walmiki was convicted of attempted murder and robbery. Despite allegations of sexual assault, he was not prosecuted for rape. He received seven years in prison. By 1980, he was free. Aruna was still lying in a hospital bed. Her wedding never happened. Her career was over, and the life she had imagined with her fiancé disappeared. As the years passed, even her relatives gradually stopped visiting. But there were people who refused to abandon her. The nurses at KEM Hospital. These women had worked alongside Aruna before the attack. Now they became the people who fed her, bathed her, changed her clothes and protected her dignity. New nurses joined the hospital, older nurses retired, and generations of staff continued caring for the woman who had once been one of them. Aruna wasn't just another patient to them. She was their colleague. Their sister. And they refused to let her be forgotten. In 2011, journalist and author Pinki Virani approached India's Supreme Court, arguing that Aruna should be allowed to die peacefully rather than continue living in such a severely disabled condition. The case sparked a national debate about mercy, suffering and the right to die. But the nurses opposed ending Aruna's life. They had cared for her for decades and wanted to continue. The Supreme Court rejected the request in Aruna's case, although its ruling opened the door to passive euthanasia under strict conditions in India. Meanwhile, Aruna remained in the same hospital where her life had changed in 1973. Then, in May 2015, she developed pneumonia. On May 18, Aruna died at the age of 66. For almost 42 years, she had depended entirely on other people for her daily care. And the man who attacked her had been free for decades. After her death, journalists located Walmiki living in Uttar Pradesh. He denied sexually assaulting Aruna and offered a different account of what happened. But his denials could never give Aruna back the life she lost. She had been a young woman with a career, a fiancé and plans for a future that never arrived. Perhaps the most heartbreaking thing about her story is that she survived the attack, yet never returned to the life she knew. Her nurses watched over her for more than four decades, showing a kind of loyalty and compassion that deserves to be remembered. KEM Hospital later named the room where Aruna had spent those years in her honour. Her attacker served seven years. Aruna lived with the consequences for almost 42. And through it all, the women who cared for her made sure she was never completely alone. 🕯️ #ArunaShanbaug #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeTok #CrimeStory
