in Kenya, the potatoes in the markets and grocery stalls are usually unwashed. They do have dirt. We wash potatoes before cooking

I store my potatoes outside in cardboard boxes WITH PEAT MOSS sprinkled over them. This apparently keeps them happy so far carrots/beets/rutabagas👌
