@tunnel.engineering: A tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a massive piece of equipment used to excavate tunnels in various types of soil and rock. It works by rotating a cutting head equipped with disc cutters or drag bits that chip away at the material in front of it. The excavated material is then transported through the machine via a conveyor system or other mechanisms. As the cutting head rotates, hydraulic cylinders push against the tunnel walls, providing the necessary force for the machine to move forward. This process allows the TBM to create a tunnel while simultaneously supporting its walls with prefabricated segments that are installed behind it. TBMs are designed to be efficient and minimise the disturbance to the surrounding area. They can vary in size and configuration depending on the specific geological conditions of the tunneling project. You can learn all tunnelling methods in our online Tunnel Engineering course.
