Last weekend, I read Yesteryear, a novel about a tradwife influencer who goes “back in time” to a world where feminism does not exist. Nobody likes this character, rightfully so, but I also felt so sorry for her. Even if she wanted to change her way of thinking and design a new life for herself, there was no real option to do that. All the money she made from influencing went into the “family account.” As a Nigerian woman, you can probably guess my answer to the question of whether couples should have joint bank accounts. But I also do not like the idea of having hidden money from my partner, as many of our parents did. My philosophy is my money is my money. Your money is your money. Our money is our money. As a financially ambitious woman, I do not believe in surrendering my financial independence to prove my trust. We can be transparent with our finances without combining every penny we earn into one account, please. There are simply too many horror stories around having joint bank accounts as a couple, and rather than practising exceptionalism by saying, “It could never be me,” I would rather be safe #wealthbuilding #womenandmoney #financialindependence #moneymindset #yesteryear
