White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday said President Trump has “not committed” to sending American troops to Gaza following his proposal Tuesday for the U.S. to “take over” the Palestinian enclave. “It’s been made very clear to the president that the United States needs to be involved in this rebuilding effort to ensure stability in the region for all people,” Ms. Leavitt said at a press briefing. “That does not mean boots on the ground in Gaza. That does not mean American taxpayers will be funding this effort.” Ms. Leavitt said the president would look to partners in the region for help with the reconstruction, which White House officials believe could take 10 to 15 years. “His administration is going to work with our partners in the region to reconstruct this region,” she said. “This is an out-of-the-box idea. That’s who President Trump is. That’s why the American people elected him, and his goal is lasting peace in the Middle East for all people in the region.” Key American allies in the region like Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia flatly rejected the president’s proposal. The Saudi government quicky put out a statement reaffirming that its support for an independent Palestinian state was “firm, steadfast and unwavering.” “The kingdom of Saudi Arabia also stresses what it had previously announced regarding its absolute rejection of infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, whether through Israeli settlement policies, annexation of Palestinian lands or efforts to displace the Palestinian people from their land,” the statement said. The governments of Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland, China and Russia also reiterated their support for a two-state solution. #karolineleavitt #whitehouse #trump #gaza #cspan
