Dont lets the extra details confused you. You got r row and r+1 columns.remove 4th row and 7th column means remove one row and one column and multiply to get the area(number of squares) hence r x (r-1)

I just know that there are r x (r+1) squares or r^2 + r. There are r cells in ANY column. In ANY row that crosses there will also be r squares REMAINING after I have removed the squares from that column. -r + -r = -2r so i started with r^2 + r but now I removed -2r. So r^2 + r - 2r= r^2 - r……..but yes I could have saved time by just picking a number LOL
