It’s funny. I used to always get uncomfortable when Sydney would post tik tok videos of her crying. She said before she didn’t want to burden her family with her feelings or her sadness and so on. That she felt more comfortable expressing all of her emotions into the camera and venting into the void. There were countless times I would get upset because I would find out news about her treatments from tik tok before she would tell me about it. I realized much too late in her journey that it was just her way of dealing with things and it was therapeutic for her and that’s okay. Everyday she was trying to deal with something that virtually nobody can understand. Like being caught in a giant tsunami and thrashed around in the ocean endlessly. All the while still trying to live a normal life. Maybe that’s why I picked up my phone and hit record when I started crying at my desk today. Since I returned to work last week, I’ve found myself crying quite frequently at my desk. It comes in waves. But maybe being raw and authentic and hearing from countless internet strangers how it’ll be okay and it’s okay to cry and grieve will make me feel better. Who’s to say. I kind of get how Sydney feels now wherein I don’t want my coworkers to see my cry, I don’t want to burden others with my sadness. But talking about my feelings into the void feels okay. It feels like I’m not burdening anybody in a way. I know there are stages on grief. I know it can be cyclical. I know Sydney is not in pain anymore. I know she loved me. I know she knows I loved her. I just wish this reality wasn’t real. I reality where my kids won’t have an aunt and I won’t ever be an uncle. Sydney would’ve been the most amazing mother, aunt, grandmother, you name it. In the countless interviews my mom and I have done in the past few weeks, one of the central themes is always how kind and selfless Sydney is. She truly put others before herself and cared so deeply about everybody in her life. She went out of her way spread kindness and radiate positivity, even when she herself was burdened with so much. She was truly a remarkable person. Our mom did a good job of raising us. I find myself trying to be more kind to others. Giving people compliments more and spreading kindness like Sydney did. She would literally stop complete strangers in the street to tell them she liked their outfit or their hair or anything most of us wouldn’t notice or be bothered to recognize. I am overwhelmed with the amount of support and kindness complete strangers have shown my mom and I since Sydney passed. Complete strangers from every corner of the globe offering kind words about a girl they never met. It makes me proud to be Sydney’s brother. People offering their hard-earned money to support her brother running a marathon. People sending flowers, cards, snacks from Australia, offering places to stay, offering us into their homes, offering to buy dinner, offering support in any way imaginable. What sort of human has the ability to bring so many people together, in a world more divided than ever, and express nothing but love and kindness? It’s incredible. It’s a testament to who Sydney Towle was and the legacy she has left us to carry on. Anyway, typing all this made me feel a bit better. Maybe I’ll do it more often to help me process the jumbled mess in my head. Keep swimming.
