Since taking office last October, 🇮🇹 Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sought to forge closer ties with the Gulf countries, shrugging off the concerns of previous coalitions over human rights in the region. Under Meloni, 🇮🇹 Italy sees itself playing an increasing role in linking the 🇪🇺 European Union with energy suppliers in the Middle East and North Africa as the EU cuts its with 🇷🇺 Russia after Putin’s invasion of 🇺🇦 Ukraine. Meanwhile, in the 🇺🇸 United States, Brett McGurk, President Joe Biden’s senior Middle East adviser, is expected to travel to 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia this week to meet with senior 🇵🇸 Palestinian officials and discuss a potential 🇵🇸 Palestinian component of a possible mega-deal between the 🇺🇸 US, 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia, and 🇮🇱 Israel, according to news reports. 🇺🇸 The Biden-Harris administration believes that an agreement that includes a 🇸🇦🇮🇱 Saudi Arabia-Israel peace deal also benefits 🇵🇸 Palestinians. In 🇫🇷 France, back in June, 🇸🇦 Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — also known as MBS — met with 🇫🇷 French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris as part of an official visit, during which he also participated in a global financing summit aimed at countering poverty and climate change. 🇫🇷 Macron and 👑🇸🇦 the prince sat down for a one-to-one working lunch at the Elysee presidential palace.
