@edwardianflaneur: The mutoscope was an apparatus for showing moving images based on the principle of the stroboscope. In the mutoscope, a large number of photographic series images are mounted radially on a shaft on stiff cardboard sheets. As the shaft rotates, the leaves are briefly stopped one after the other by a stop on the housing and are thus shown to the viewer through the display opening for a fraction of a second. The overall impression of these rapidly successive and briefly stationary images is – as with the Kinetoscope – that of a single moving film.
