Neon Genesis Evangelion is so good because it isn’t just about big robots fighting aliens, it’s really about people and what’s going on inside their heads, like fear, loneliness, depression, and the need to feel accepted, and it shows all that in a way that feels real instead of cheesy. Every character is lowkey broken in some way, especially Shinji, and watching him struggle with self-worth and running away from responsibility hits hard because it’s stuff a lot of people actually feel but don’t say out loud. The show uses crazy visuals, symbolism, and quiet moments to represent mental states, like empty spaces, mirrors, and repeating thoughts, which makes it feel more like you’re inside their minds than just watching a story. Asuka’s pride covering her insecurity, Rei’s lack of identity, and Gendo’s emotional distance all connect to different psychological themes like trauma, attachment issues, and existentialism. Even the angels aren’t just enemies, they feel like representations of different fears and challenges the characters face internally. And the ending especially goes full psychological mode, basically breaking reality to explore Shinji’s thoughts about himself and whether he deserves to exist, which is confusing but also deep if you think about it. Evangelion doesn’t spoon-feed you answers, it makes you sit with uncomfortable feelings and reflect on yourself, which is why it sticks with people for so long.
