BIOGRAPHY OF SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, NIGERIA’S FIRST PRIME MINISTER 🧑🏫 Early Life & Education Born December 1912 in Tafawa Balewa village, Lere district, Bauchi Province, Northern Nigeria. Eldest child to Yakubu Dan Zala (of Bageri ethnicity) and Fatima Inna (Fulani) . Initial studies in Qur’anic school, then Bauchi Provincial (Middle) School (1925–1928). Described as shy, quiet, with English as his strongest subject . Attended Katsina Teacher Training College (Barewa College) from 1928–1933, earned a third‑class certificate, winning accolades in English . TEACHING & FURTHER STUDIES Returned to Bauchi as an English teacher. Rose to headmaster of Bauchi Middle School by 1941 and later became Inspector of Schools . In 1945, among the first Northern Nigerians awarded scholarships to the University of London Institute of Education, obtaining a teaching diploma and broadening his worldview . 🗳 POLITICAL RISE Co‑founded the Northern People’s Congress (NPC) in 1949 with Sir Ahmadu Bello to represent Northern interests politically . Elected to the Northern Region’s House of Assembly in 1946, and in 1947 became one of five Northern representatives to the Central Legislative Council in Lagos . Served as Vice‑President of the Northern Teacher’s Association in 1948—an early sign of his leadership in Northern civil society . 🏛 GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP From 1952 served in the federal government as Minister of Works and Transport, overseeing key infrastructure like railways, ports, and the Niger Bridge . Appointed Chief Minister in 1957 and then became the first Prime Minister upon Nigeria's independence in October 1960 . Formed a coalition government with southern parties led by Nnamdi Azikiwe . 🌍 FOREIGN POLICY & INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCE Played instrumental roles in negotiating during the Congo civil war, strongly condemning apartheid after the Sharpeville Massacre, and advocating for the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 . Honored abroad with invitations such as addressing a joint session of the U.S. Congress in 1961, where he made a powerful impression with his “Golden Voice” . 🎖 HONORS & LEGACY Knighted as KBE by Queen Elizabeth II in January 1960, with honorary doctorates from the University of Sheffield (May 1960) and New York University (July 1961) . Commemorated through institutions and landmarks such as: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Bauchi State International Airport Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, redeveloped as the site of Nigeria’s independence celebrations . Portrait featured on the ₦5 Naira banknote . 🕊 FINAL DAYS & DEATH On January 15, 1966, he was kidnapped during Nigeria’s first military coup. His body was found days later by the roadside near Ifo or Abeokuta and buried in Bauchi. His tomb is now a national monument . His assassination triggered riots in the North and set the tone for Nigeria’s subsequent instability . Abubakar Tafawa Balewa remains a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history — a humble educator who rose to national leadership, advocating unity while maintaining regional balance, and navigating the turbulent transition to independence with dignity and grace.
