First, gather your supplies, which includes gauze pads or an ampule opening device, alcohol prep, and the ampule itself. Perform hand hygiene, and then flick the top of the ampule to remove any liquid. Inspect to ensure everything is secure and that the ampule is not expired or discolored. Open the alcohol to clean the ampule. Allow to dry. Next, take folded gauze and snap the ampule at its scored line in a direction away from your body. If your facility has a device to open the ampule, you can use that. Some nurses even use alcohol prep pads. When you are finished, be sure to use a filter straw to draw up medication, and discard the ampule into the sharps container.
