@aaron_kubaldc: Life gets a lot easier when you realize your body isn’t stupid. You don’t give yourself “flared ribs.” It’s either normal anatomical variation (like wide hips/flat feet etc.), OR it’s the result of an ACTUAL condition (scoliosis, pectus excavatum etc.). It’s not something you “fix.” And you know how to breathe. You do it when you’re not even conscious. Your neck muscles are not “compensatory” or “accessory” breathing muscles; that myth came from a study that used skin surface electrodes for the EMG which can’t detect low levels of activity. Your scalenes & SCM (neck muscles) are active whether you like it or not. We don’t have much control over what muscles we’re activating - luckily it doesn’t matter. Lots of these things are automatic responses driven by demand. We mouth breathe during exercise because we need greater acute volumes of oxygen. We brace automatically when someone is about to punch us or a heavy load is placed on us. Trying to micromanage your body’s automatic processes is silly & can even be counterproductive. Focus on the task at hand & trust that your body can handle the little details. Or go all-in & start thinking about your blinking strategy & using ninja focus to adjust your heart rate lol #diaphragmaticbreathing #breathing #breathingexercises #breathingtechniques #ribflare
Flared ribs are definitely a thing. I’ve had them my entire life and spend much of middle school trying to figure out how to hold my abs to hide them

It’s definitely a thing but usually just result of poor posture. Engaging the obliques will fix it for most people

I hated all the diaphragm breathing exercises in band/choir cause I could never “do them right.” It’s made me really self-conscious about my breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing has some decent studies on it’s effect, and the mechanism makes sense

I have a rib that shows very obviously, but this is most likely due to Scoliosis.

All I know is that I also have “flared ribs”. Why do some of us have our ribs pop out more than others?? 🤔 Is it just something some of us are born
