2025 has just begun and US President-elect Donald has not been inaugurated yet, but Elon Musk has already commandeered global politics through dozens of rapid-fire, often inflammatory posts to his more than 200 million followers on X. He has meddled in German politics and upcoming elections; he has critized the Italian justice system after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s immigration policies were halted; and he has praised Canadian politician Pierre Poilievre as an alternative to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Now, Musk is trolling the UK with strong criticism of the British government, calling on King Charles III to step in and dissolve parliament. The tech billionaire and top adviser to Trump triggered an explosive row this past week over British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s handling of internal political affairs. Musk’s recent posts have also sparked debate about the constitutional powers of the British monarch. While the King, as head of state, technically holds the authority to dissolve parliament, such action is traditionally exercised on the advice of the sitting Prime Minister as head of government and is largely ceremonial in modern times. After mostly ignoring Musk’s trolling, which has now been going on for months, the British government snapped back yesterday, though in characteristically polite fashion. “Elon Musk is an American citizen and perhaps ought to focus on issues on the other side of the Atlantic,” stated British Health Minister Andrew Gwynne. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: “Some of the criticisms Elon Musk has made, I think, are misjudged and certainly misinformed.” Privately, British officials say they hope that after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, Musk will be too busy overhauling the American federal government to continue his daily barrage of criticism of Britain and Germany. But in the meantime, his online reach is broad enough that it seems to affect the political weather and taking over the current news cycle. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy
