Is knee hyperextension a problem? Not if you know about it! Unlock or co-contract those knees! If you are hypermobile, Grab our free Hypermobility resources in the link in our bio or in our stories.! Hyperextension is usually the result of having too much range of motion at a joint and letting your body “rest” into its own ligaments rather than using your muscles to support the joint. Hyperextension of any joint (elbows, fingers, toes, wrists, etc) can be a problem if you are totally unaware that you are doing it. It can contribute to the “tightness” that hypermobile folk experience because it can further lengthen ligaments that support the joint. This creates more laxity in the joint, which in turn causes the receptors in the joint to sense that laxity and tells the muscles to “tighten up” and guard the joint (increase the stretch reflex). Strengthening the muscles around a hypermobile joint can be incredibly beneficial. We teach you how to do this slowly and progressively in our Hypermobility and Limitless program (for the non-hypermobile peeps). You can also consciously “unlock” the knee when standing around (works for the elbow as well) or “co-contract” the opposing sides of the thigh (works for the elbow too!). Co-contraction will both strengthen the muscles and prevent the joint from hyperextension. It can be best to start this kind of training in an isometric exercise where the body doesn’t move (unlike the stepups that Katie is doing). Hope these cues help you out! Eventually, if you strengthen your hamstrings and calves enough, the tension from your strengthened muscles can help decrease the hyperextension (this takes LOTS of practice and time). #kneepain #kneeache #hyperextension #kneehyperextension #heds #eds #hsd #hypermobility #hypermobileehlersdanlossyndrome #hypermobile #ehlersdanlossyndrome #calves #anatomy #hamstrings #patellartendonitis #popliteus #poplitealfossa #meniscus #ACL #MCL #PCL #LCL
