Have you ever tried to explain a feeling or an experience but felt that words were failing you? You try your best, but they are always missing the mark. Well, according to Hélène Cixous, it might not be your fault. Cixous argues that some people are forced to use a language that was never really built for their experiences. For example, suppose somebody says, ‘well, it’s not really sad,’ and ‘this is not really anger,’ ‘I’m not really sure what it is.’ The problem is that a lot of the language we inherit is blunt, theatrical, and clichéd. We learn expressions that other people use to explain their feelings, but they never entirely map onto our own. Consider, for example, grief. Suppose that you lose a loved one, and so you are presented with a menu of options. You have to say you are sad. You are devastated. You are numb. But the problem is, none of these words are entirely sufficient. They are somebody else’s words. In her book, The Laugh of Medusa, Cixous applies this to what she calls ‘women’s writing.’ This is a style of writing that deviates from traditionally male expressions and male ways of seeing the world, and uses a language that more fully maps onto the female perspective. But Cixous’s work applies to everyone. Language is often a magical, wonderful, and poetic unearthing of the unseen and unknown elements of being human, but it can also feel like somebody else’s experience. Sometimes we need to sit down with our feelings, live the feelings, and hope that other people read them on our faces.
