Hurricane interviews: Part 1 Our sixth interview related to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene was with Jonathan Howard and Charlie Keebaugh of Aerial Recovery Group. Jonathan, an entrepreneur who also serves in the Florida National Guard and works with Aerial Recovery, and Charlie, a volunteer with Aerial Recovery, traveled to North Carolina after Hurricane Helene to assist those in need. Once arriving, the men made their way to Lake Lure after leadership from Aerial Recovery were connected to the Mayor of the town by @robertfkennedyjr As Jonathan and Charlie made their way to Lake Lure, they were stopped by multiple police officers who said they’d been advised not to allow Aerial Recovery in, despite the mayor’s request. Charlie believes this was due to a “rift” with individuals from a state task force from Michigan, who, according to both men, were on “power trips” and letting their egos interfere with rescuing people. Jonathan and Charlie expressed frustration, saying they only wanted to help rescue people but were consistently delayed on day one because these individuals said the men lacked clearance from the state/federal government. Later on, both men were introduced to a pilot operating a helicopter. This pilot, employed by a billionaire who wanted to help, had directed his pilot to bring the helicopter to North Carolina to help deliver essential supplies and rescue people. With the pilot’s help, Jonathan and Charlie began running multiple missions. They shared stories of two rescues: one of a premature baby in critical condition and another of a woman on oxygen who was running out of fuel to power her generator. According to Jonathan and Charlie, six days after the storm hit, they were still finding people who had any contact with rescuers due to the widespread destruction of roads and bridges. In part two, releasing tomorrow, they discuss what they see as the failures that lawmakers made during the response to Hurricane Helene and what communities need to do to prepare for future disasters.
