“I haven’t done anything, just fed the baby.” Okay, but that could mean up to 84 feeds and around 200 ounces of breast milk produced in one week. Newborns typically breastfeed 8–12 times every 24 hours. Once milk production is established, exclusively breastfed babies often consume roughly 24–30 ounces of breast milk per day—or around 168–210 ounces every week. And those numbers still don’t capture the whole job. They don’t count getting comfortable and positioned. Helping a baby latch. Switching sides. Burping. Changing diapers. Settling them afterward. Waking up overnight. Managing leaking or engorgement. Or pumping, storing milk and washing parts for families who pump. Breastfeeding can look like sitting still. But you’re not. You’re working. If you’re in the early weeks and it feels like feeding your baby has become your entire day, the numbers explain at least part of why. 🤍 Intake varies by baby’s age and individual needs. These figures are estimates, not feeding targets. Bodily provides educational information, not medical advice.
