@cassieuhl: Could embarking on communal rites of passage help heal our dysfunctional relationships with death and dying? I think it could sure help. What do you think? Death is a rite of passage. It only makes sense that if communal rites of passage haven't been a part of your life, that death would be terrifying. Through my personal losses and being ushered into death work, I became more interested in rites of passage. I wanted to understand why, as a society, so many are disconnected from the process of dying, why we hide the dying away, and why so many fear discussing death and grief. A veil lifted as I embarked on my mature feminine rites of passage. Of course, we have dysfunctional relationships with death because many of us have never embarked on communal rites of passage to learn how to be with death, held by others in our grief, integrate our losses, and rise transformed. In mature feminine rites of passage from the archetypal maiden to mother, I learned how to release and grieve the parts of my maiden phase that were ready to shed. I learned how to be witnessed and held by others who'd gone before me so I could integrate what was lost. Rising from this rooted place transformed, I could take up the sacred calling of stepping into mother—the communal protectress of this earth and her beings. Communal rites of passage offer a framework for navigating all the gritty and life-changing experiences we walk through, including death. Perhaps if more of us were guided through communal rites of passage, death wouldn't be so scary, and maybe compassionate choices for the dying would be more commonplace. It might not be the answer, but it's a powerful path.
