@ambersaussies: Why is it important to prepare your dog before you go on a backpacking trip?? ⤵️ Trust me, when you’re 4 miles and 2,000ft of elevation gain into your hike, the LAST thing you want is to have to worry if your dog can make it the rest of the way. Besides, it’s just not really fair to them if they’re not used to doing it. Follow these steps to get them physically ready for your hike and backpacking trip: 1️⃣ *Gradually* start to increase the distance of your walks at home. Don’t suddenly go from one block to three miles, take it in baby steps. You could add 1/2-1 mile every week, or more if you and your dog are very active. This will vary depending on the difficulty and length of hike you are planning on going on, so do your research and figure that out first. 2️⃣ Try to include hills or some type of elevation gain into your walks. This will prepare you for the more difficult hikes you will be going on, especially if it is higher in elevation than where you live. 3️⃣ Bring water and doggy snacks if you’re going far, as you will definitely want these handy when you go out for real. And TAKE BREAKS! Follow along for Part 2 next week: Getting Used to Gear 👀 Do you go backpacking with your dog?
