Just dont overthink it. Its 3 wires. Either theres two hots or 1 hot and a neutral. Just troubleshoot until you see what makes the devices function

Oh no. I hate when people do their own stuff. Had a customer that wired up a ceiling fan and wouldn’t work at the switch. It was a back feed switch.
