All eyes on Iran. 🤍🇮🇷 I’m not an expert at all, but I’ve been trying to learn more about what is happening in Iran. In 1953, Iran’s democratically elected government was overthrown in a UK–US backed coup after it moved to nationalise its oil. That coup helped pave the way for decades of instability, repression, and eventually the 1979 revolution that brought the Islamic Republic to power. Since then, Iranians have lived under an authoritarian Islamist regime that tightly controls daily life: from what women can wear, to who people can love, to how and whether they can protest. Dissent is criminalised, LGBTQ+ people are persecuted, and protest is met with violence. The recent wave of protests began after the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, but the movement never really stopped - it has continued and resurfaced again and again, because the conditions people are living under have not changed. In recent weeks, people across Iran have bravely returned to the streets demanding basic rights and freedom. The state’s response has been brutal. Tens of thousands have been detained and many are at risk of execution after unfair trials. The regime has repeatedly shut down the internet and restricted media to stop the world from seeing what’s happening and to isolate people from one another. WE MUST AMPLIFY THEIR BRAVERY. I’m in awe of the courage of Iranians who continue to resist under these conditions, and I’m thinking of everyone who has lost their lives. They deserve our support and voices. But we also need to be wary of the motivea of those in power wanting “external intervention”. In the past it’s been driven by power and oil rather than genuine concern for people’s lives. For now we must listen to and amplify Iranian voices, refuse to look away. Whatever the politics, one thing is clear: people in Iran deserve the same right to live freely, safely, and with dignity as anyone else. ❤️ This was recorded 2 days ago and I’m also mindful that verified sources are difficult to obtain due to the media blackout. My aim is to share reliable information. ❤️
