@wearedigitaldiplomacy: 🇪🇺 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated today that the whole of 🇪🇺 Europe must come up with a common strategy to tackle the rising number of migrants arriving in 🇪🇺 European soil — mostly in southern countries like 🇮🇹 Italy. 🇮🇹 Italy is under particular pressure following a surge in the number of migrant boats arriving at the island of Lampedusa from 🌍 North Africa. The 🇮🇹 Italian interior ministry said yesterday that 133,005 people have arrived in Italy on migrant boats so far this year, almost double the 69,806 that landed in the equivalent period last year. “Yes, we also discuss migration,” 🇪🇺 von der Leyen said at a press conference today with 🇨🇿 Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala. “This is a phenomenon that concerns the whole of Europe and it needs a European response,” she added. 🇪🇺 President von der Leyen — who recently visited Lampedusa with 🇮🇹 Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni — said the 🇪🇺 EU wants to support all Member States to manage migration in an effective way. 🇪🇺 She also promised 🇨🇿 Fiala special support in the reception of 🇺🇦 Ukrainian refugees. #ursulavonderleyen #digitaldiplomacy
