Kids understand that love makes a family, and they are more comfortable with the fluidity of family than anyone. They feel no need to define with words at one moment in time what we all feel- it’s just family. Emi and Elliot refer to Theo as their brother, sometimes they call him their cousin, often he’s just Theo who they love deeply and know is family. And he feels the same. I refer to Theo as my nephew, but he’s also one of my kids. He is Kama & Nate’s son, not biological, but they are his parents, and he is my sister’s baby. We follow the kids lead, not worrying about how to label it for others comfort, not worrying about how it changes day to day or month to month so that it can fit into a conventional definition of a family OR what’s known as a split family. It’s neither, it’s just us, and following the kid’s lead was the best thing we ever did. And not just my kids, but also the kids in our community understand this so organically too- better than the parents, better than the therapists & doctors, the judges & lawyers, the teachers or childcare providers. They try, and many do, but it’s not the same as how the kids process it. At least this has been my experience since we became what many would call an “unconventional” family. 3 years ago our immediate family grew from being Emi, Elliot, Doug and I, to include Theo, my nephew, and Kama and Nate - his Mom and Dad and our co-guardians. It’s been the kids who have taught us how to share our experience as a family with others. Theo chose to call Kama & Nate Mom and Dad, and Doug and I Mama and Papa. Sometimes he calls us Auntie Katy and Uncle Doug. #lovemakesafamily #familyislove #kinshipcare #Siblings #cousiblings #guardianship
