But here is an abridged version: I was in Korea for the first time on a sort of identity journey, visiting a rural part of Korea up in the mountains where both my grandparents that I never got to meet were from. I was looking for my grandfather and my ancestors’ graves, and searching for the traces of my great Aunt. Moments before our chance encounter, I cried into the river, longer and harder than I have cried for years. We got back into the car, then I spotted a little dog in the road and shouted at my boyfriend to stop the car. A split second encounter changed both our lives for the better.
