@lauralovesteaching: Replying to @user1019173846393 English can be tricky because we have multiple spellings for one sound. F and FF are the most common. Those are the ways we first teach children when they’re learning to read and spell. PH is higher level, phonics and that just denotes that it’s Greek in origin. The ending GH making the F sound is so rare that we just have to commit those to memory. They’re just telling us they’re really old and that GH used to be pronounced.
