I grew up with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. We each got a “pan” cake. Singular. Mama didn’t have time to make a hundred little ones. 🥰

Lençóis Maranhenses. The place that broke my brain. White sand dunes stretching endlessly into the horizon. Crystal blue lagoons appearing out of nowhere. No filters. No editing. Just Brazil being absolutely unreal. This is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Maranhão, northeast Brazil. And honestly? It might be the most underrated destination on the planet. Everyone talks about Rio, the Amazon, Iguazu Falls. But this? This is something else entirely. Here’s what you need to know before you go: WHAT ACTUALLY IS IT? Lençóis Maranhenses is a 1,500 square kilometre expanse of rolling white sand dunes. But unlike any desert you’ve seen, rain collects between the dunes and creates thousands of freshwater lagoons. Bright blue. Crystal clear. Warm enough to swim in. It looks like another planet. It looks impossible. But it’s real and it’s in Brazil. BEST TIME TO VISIT LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES This is crucial. The lagoons only exist from around May to September. Peak season is June, July, and August when the lagoons are fullest and the water is warmest. Visit between October and April and you’ll find empty dunes with no water. Still beautiful, but not the same experience. July is generally considered the sweet spot. The lagoons are full, the weather is perfect, and the landscape is at its most photogenic. HOW TO GET TO LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES Fly into São Luís, the capital of Maranhão. From there, it’s about a 4-hour drive or bus ride to Barreirinhas, the main gateway town to the national park. You can also fly into Barreirinhas directly if you find connecting flights. From Barreirinhas, you’ll need a 4x4 tour to access the dunes. You cannot drive yourself into the park. The sand is too soft and the terrain too unpredictable. Book a tour locally or in advance. Half-day tours, full-day tours, sunset tours, sunrise tours. All of them are worth it. THE MAIN LAGOONS TO VISIT Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon) and Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon) are the most famous and most accessible from Barreirinhas. They’re stunning but also the most crowded. For something more remote, ask about Lagoa da Esperança or the Cardoso region. The further you go, the fewer people you’ll see. Some tours offer overnight camping experiences deep in the dunes. Imagine watching the sunset and sunrise over this landscape with no one else around. WHAT TO BRING Sunscreen. Lots of it. There’s zero shade out there. A hat, sunglasses, water, and waterproof bags for your phone and camera. The sand gets everywhere. Wear light, loose clothing. Sandals or barefoot is the way. The sand is soft and hot during midday, cooler in the morning and evening. HOW LONG TO SPEND Most people do 2-3 days in Barreirinhas. That gives you time for a couple of different tours covering different areas of the park. You could do a quick day trip from São Luís but you’d be rushing. This place deserves more time. Let yourself slow down here. THE VIBE It’s peaceful. Surreal. Quiet except for the wind. Swimming in those lagoons with the dunes all around you is one of those moments that stays with you. The kind of place that makes you question why you haven’t been prioritising travel more. IS IT WORTH THE TRIP? Yes. A thousand times yes. It’s not the easiest place to reach. Brazil is huge. The northeast doesn’t get as much tourist attention as the south. But that’s exactly why you should go. This isn’t overrun with crowds. It hasn’t been commercialised to death. It still feels like a discovery. If you’re planning a Brazil itinerary, a South America trip, or just looking for places that will genuinely take your breath away, add this to your list. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Barreirinhas, Maranhão, Brazil. Not a bucket list. Just a place that won’t leave my head. Save this for your Brazil trip planning. You’ll thank yourself later. #lencoismaranhenses #braziltravel #tripmemo #southamerica #travelbrazil
