@fascinatedbyfungi: I am pretty sure this is a toxic Satan’s Bolete or Rubroboletus. They are distinct for being some of the only toxic bolete mushrooms. They have characteristic red pores, red stems, and distinctive webbing (reticulation) on the upper part of the stem. They stain blue when injured, but more slowly than similar looking red-pored boletes (Suillellus/Neoboletus). . Rubroboletus contain bolesatine, a toxic glycoprotein that inhibits protein synthesis in the liver . It is not common way to get poisoned, but people have unalived themselves by eating too much of these mushrooms. Bolesatine is heat stable, so unlike other red pored boletes, no amount of cooking can make these safe to eat. . The pale velvety tan cap on this specimen does not match the redder NA species rhodosanguineus.
