Ever wonder what goes into making the perfect candle? It’s a lot more than just finding the perfect scent. After picking out your scent, vessel (fancy candle term for container), and wax you need to find the perfect wick and balance of all 3. It’s a lot harder than you may think. Here’s some of the things we look for during our burn testing. 1. Flame height: the height of the candle's flame. Ideally, it should be steady and not too high. A flame that is too tall may indicate that the wick is too large for the candle, which can lead to excessive heat and uneven burning. 2. Flame stability: A stable flame is important for safe burning. Look for a flame that doesn't flicker excessively, lean to one side, or create black smoke. These signs may indicate issues with the wick or the quality of the candle. 3. Vessel temperature: Pay attention to the temperature of the vessel holding the candle. It should not become excessively hot, as this can pose a fire hazard or cause the container to crack. You should ALWAYS be able to pick up your candle comfortably. 4. Smoke/soot: Minimal smoke and soot production are desirable qualities in a candle. Excessive smoke or soot can be an indication of poor-quality wax, too large a wick, or too much fragrance. Opt for candles that burn cleanly without leaving behind residue or discoloration. 5. Melt pool: Observe the melt pool, which is the liquid wax that forms as the candle burns. A good-quality candle should create an even and steady melt pool that reaches the edges of the container. This ensures that the candle burns evenly, maximizing its lifespan. 6. Hot throw: The hot throw refers to the strength of the fragrance emitted when the candle is lit. We like them smelling strong! #candlemaking #candlemaker #SmallBusiness
