or another trick, cut the sheet rock but leave the outer layer longer and you don't have to out the wood inside.

They also have a mesh type fabric you can put over the hole and then use the compound and sand. I’ve used this for doorknob holes several times!

you could’ve took the dry wall tape stuff and put it over the hole and covered it in the putty and sand looks just like new when finished
