Happy #ColumbusDay, colonizers, sympathizers, genocide supporters & all other palm-colored rejects & hangers ons! And to all of my fellow native peoples & our loving, educated, truth-seeking allies & white-washed history resisters, Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay! What better day, what better person & what better location to bring you the following information than me — a registered citizen of #CherokeeNation, residing in a town named after the topic at hand, on a “holiday” that was also created in their honor? So, without further ado, here it is! 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Christopher Columbus, often depicted as a heroic explorer who “discovered” America, was actually a deeply controversial figure whose actions had devastating consequences for Indigenous peoples. The truth about Columbus is much darker than the sanitized versions taught in many history books. ⚔️ Brutality & Exploitation: Columbus was directly involved in the enslavement, exploitation, and abuse of the Indigenous peoples he encountered. Upon arriving in the Caribbean, he and his men quickly enslaved the local Taino people, forcing them to work in brutal conditions to mine for gold. Failure to meet Columbus’s quotas often resulted in extreme punishments, including mutilation (such as cutting off hands) and death. According to accounts from his contemporaries, entire villages were wiped out due to the violence and forced labor imposed by Columbus and his men. 🪭 Sex Slavery: Columbus also played a role in the sexual exploitation of Indigenous women and girls. He wrote to his superiors in Spain about how girls as young as nine or ten could be sold into sexual slavery. His actions contributed to the institutionalization of human trafficking in the region. ✊🏾 Genocide: The arrival of Columbus and his men marked the beginning of one of the largest genocides in history. The Taino population of Hispaniola (modern-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic) was decimated. Historians estimate that the population was reduced from around 300,000 to fewer than 500 in a matter of decades, due to a combination of forced labor, disease brought by the Europeans, and violent massacres. ⚠️ Greed & Corruption: Columbus was not on a noble quest for exploration. His primary motivation was wealth and power. He was obsessed with finding gold and securing vast territories for Spain, and he promised the Spanish monarchy huge returns on their investment. He repeatedly manipulated and deceived Indigenous leaders, taking advantage of their goodwill, while he and his men plundered their resources. 📜 Colonial Governance: During his time as governor of Hispaniola, Columbus ruled with cruelty and corruption. Even the Spanish settlers, who were supposed to benefit from his leadership, turned against him due to his tyranny. Reports of his mismanagement, including his brutal treatment of both the Indigenous population and his own men, led to his arrest and removal from his post. He was sent back to Spain in chains. 📝 Historical Revisionism: Much of the positive mythology around Columbus emerged centuries after his death. Early histories painted him as a brave, pious explorer who expanded Christendom. However, many of these narratives ignored or glossed over the atrocities committed under his command. The revision of Columbus’s image to that of a national hero, particularly in the U.S., was driven by various political and social factors, including the desire to create a heroic figure for Italian-American communities and to fit the larger narrative of American exceptionalism. In short, Columbus’s legacy is marked by greed, violence, and the initiation of European colonization that would have devastating effects on the Indigenous peoples of the Americas for centuries. He wasn’t the benign explorer of legend but rather a figure whose actions ushered in an era of exploitation and suffering.
