But what about Deaf children? Where is their voice and their right to receive the same language access that my CODA child has? *if the captions are fast pace to read, please read the full transcript of captions below My conversation with my toddler transcript: Chey- what were you doing (showed the picture) Fey- orange! Chey- oh, okay it’s orange and what were you making Fey- pumpkin! Chey- oh pumpkin! How did you make pumpkin? Fey- (shows how she did that- using her fists) Chey- oh! that’s how you painted pumpkins! Chey- was it fun? *Another picture to show Chey- what were you doing Fey- friends! Chey-oh! they are your friends Chey- your friends and you were in the line for the picture, right? Chey- where are you in this picture? Fey- she points at herself Chey- show me again where were you The full transcript from captions: If my CODA toddler has access to ASL and can fully interact in conversations before turning 2, it highlights the remarkable impact early language exposure has on cognitive and social development. But what about Deaf children? For Deaf children, early access to ASL is just as, if not more, crucial. It allows them to build a strong foundation for language and communication, which is vital for developing literacy skills, social relationships, and self-esteem. Early intervention ensures that Deaf children have the same opportunities as their hearing peers to thrive, reach developmental milestones, and participate fully in their communities. Without early exposure, Deaf children may face delays in language acquisition that can have long-term effects on their overall development. Over 70% of Deaf children do not develop age appropriate language skills without intervention. How can we reduce that number below 70%? Learn ASL for your Deaf child, connect with local resources through the Deaf community, and advocate for and educate yourself on policies impacting Deaf children. It can become possible, make a change and others will follow. Parents are the powerful tools, remember that. video id: a white woman signing to her toddler in the kitchen- captions are shown (full transcript are available here) #deaf #fyp #deafawareness #deaftok #ASL #deafculture #deaftiktok #momtok #deafcommunity
