@cbcnews: Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International say it has verified claims that the Israeli military is using white phosphorus in Gaza and Lebanon. CBC News spoke to Brian Castner, a weapons investigator with Amnesty International’s crisis team. He said all three videos we showed him appeared to show white phosphorus being used in a potentially dangerous way. “The evidence is plain as day,” he said. “We call on Israel not to ever use these weapons in a populated area. It is so difficult to differentiate between civilians and military objects.” White phosphorus isn’t designated as a chemical weapon, but it's highly flammable and exposure can be deadly. Israel was criticized by humanitarian groups in 2008-09 for the widespread use of white phosphorus bombs on civilian populations instead of a less lethal smokescreen during battle. The Israeli government has told media outlets, including Reuters and France 24, that it denies claims it uses white phosphorus munitions. CBC News has not independently verified the rights group's accounts of white phosphorus munitions being used by Israel. #Israel #Gaza #Lebanon
