We just lived the high life @SilverStar Mountain Resort and it was a trip I will never forget. I am extremely grateful for these opportunities. For a decade we lived off 55-70k CAD/year in a relatively “expensive” mountain town. We didn’t do ski trips - we simply did ski life. There were toys and gear items I sometimes wanted but we couldn’t afford. I worked at our local ski hill and received a family ski pass as a staff benefit. I made $15-18$/hour as a father of 2 (and then 3 kids) for many years in the winter. Earning $20-$25/hour as a paramedic until I went back to school part time to level up. The year I found out I was going to become a father I made 28k as an annual income. As a young family we bought used gear and had access to deals working within the industry. End of season ski deals were often just as good. We didn’t buy new jackets or pants as adults for years. That was for the growing kids. I also skied on the same pair of skis for multiple seasons. I worked nights as a paramedic (some of them are quiet) allowing me to be able to be home more days. The first house we owned was a 1 bedroom un-level “minor shack.” We needed co-signing and down payment loan help. (We serviced the debt and paid it all back). We co-bought our 2nd house with my parents allowing us to have more together for less. This helped them as well. I’m not saying we did it all on our own. Because we didn’t. We had help from family. And it has always taken a village to raise the children. #grateful We prioritize outdoor recreation because it’s good for the soul. Our souls as parents and that of the kids. This was the lifestyle we wanted. I was often amazed at how many people I met in life who made 2-3x the money we did and they simple weren’t enjoying themselves nor did it seem they were living a life that they wanted to be living. I won the life lottery as a middle-class Canadian and I recognize not everyone starts with a level playing field. But it is also possible to make decisions that align with our values and to work towards a goal - whatever that may be. And in that sense, we’ve come a long way. #family #richlife #ski #familytime #skitok #personalfinance
