Your ears make a noise which can be used to know where you're looking at with your eyes. Source: Parametric information about eye movements is sent to the ears Stephanie N Lovich et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2023. #science #researchpaper #researcharticle #stem #interesting #facts #interestingfacts #edutainment #todayilearned #themoreyouknow #biology #eli5 #newtech I like to read brand new research articles and simplify it for you The article I read today explained how scientists can now know what your looking at just by hearing the sound your ear makes, which, hold on if that’s confusing First let’s see how they did the test They had a bunch of people, and they had them sit down in front of a screen with a chin rest so their head doesn’t move Then they put earbuds with microphones in their ears Just like you up to this point I thought ears were used to hear sounds, I guess they also make sounds now when I move my eye around And then finally they had grids like these ones and they moved around the black dot and recorded the sounds their ears were making I feel uncomfortable thinking about it to be honest Can’t tell if I’m hearing something or I’m hallucinating now, I donno So now let’s go into their findings, which are these charts Which took me about a minute to understand Let’s just look at one of the charts, the one that says 18, 12 above it, I’ll explain what that means in a second You’re seeing multiple lines with different colors right? Each of these line colors shows where the original dot was in the grid we were looking at So the green line means we started off looking at the center dot. that was the origin of our eye’s focus Which has the coordinates 0, 0 So the 18, 12 will be the coordinates for the dot on the top right To sum it up, the green line here is the signal of the sound your left ear generated when you moved your eye from the center of the screen to the top right Then by looking at all this data they can come up with a regression line that predicts these ear sounds by looking at your eye movement If you don’t know what regression is, you might not understand what I said, but don’t worry Just look at these charts, the red lines are predictions, these are the scientists guessing what the ear sound is going to be like when the eye moves The black lines are the actual sounds the ears ended up making And it’s really close, and you know what that means right? The exact opposite works as well, Just by listening to your ear, they can know where your looking And they did exactly that In these charts the red dots are predictions of where people were looking and the black dots are where they were actually looking We already have eye trackers, I’m sure you’ve seen some videos with them, but Tell me in the comments what applications you think this technology is going to have? I have 4 or 5 ideas right now, but I wanted to know what you think. Also please Like and Follow so I can continue making content
