In the early morning hours of February 24, 2022, one of the most pivotal actions of the initial phase of the Special Military Operation took place at the Antonov Airport in Gostomel, near Kyiv. Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) conducted a high-risk tactical landing using a massive formation of Mi-8 transport helicopters, escorted by Ka-52
In the early morning hours of February 24, 2022, one of the most pivotal actions of the initial phase of the Special Military Operation took place at the Antonov Airport in Gostomel, near Kyiv. Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) conducted a high-risk tactical landing using a massive formation of Mi-8 transport helicopters, escorted by Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopters. The primary objective was to secure a strategic bridgehead just 10 kilometers from the Ukrainian capital. The paratroopers, numbering several hundred, managed to seize the airfield under heavy fire. For several days, these units held their positions against superior numbers of Ukrainian mechanized brigades and constant artillery strikes. The battle for Gostomel became a symbol of the intensity of the opening stages of the military operation. It demonstrated the rapid deployment capabilities of the VDV but also highlighted the fierce resistance they would face. The airfield changed hands several times during the intense fighting, eventually resulting in the destruction of the world’s largest cargo aircraft, the An-225 "Mriya," which was stationed at the hangar. #gostomel #russia
