@mattykjordan: We made it to Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds! One of the most iconic places in Antarctica and so rarely visited. It is the site where Sir Ernest Shackleton and 13 of his men lived from 1907-1909. The team staying here made the first ascent of Mount Erebus, printed the first book in Antarctica, and at the time became the men who reached the furthest point south.. just shy of the pole. The hut is situated right next to the world’s southernmost penguin colony where about 4,000 penguins live jn the summer. We visited so early in the season so we didnt get the chance to see any penguins on this visit. They’re still out at sea. This was my second visit to this spot. It is notoriously difficult to get to due to sea ice conditions often prohibiting overland travel. We encountered quite a few obstacles on the way but after 4 hiurs of driving, managed to make it there from Scott Base. The hut is a designated Antarctic Specially Protected Area under the Antarctic Treaty System, so entry is by permit only. Limited numbers are allowed in the hut each year to ensure that the site is preserved for future generations. It is currently maintained and monitored annually by the Antarctic Heritage Trust in New Zealand. They do an amazing job to ensure that this special place is preserved for future generations. #shackleton #ernestshackleton #nimrod #caperoyds #antarctica #antarctic #scottbase #heritage #historic #history #iconic
