Read caption⬇️ The Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, located in the heart of Rome, is a remarkable example of Baroque architecture and has several interesting curiosities: 1️⃣ Illusory Perspective: One of the most fascinating features of the church is the frescoed ceiling in the central nave. This fresco is designed to create an optical illusion of a real dome, even though the church doesn't actually have a proper dome. This architectural trick was executed by the painter Andrea Pozzo in the 17th century. 2️⃣ Extended Construction Time: The construction of the church began in 1626 but faced numerous delays due to various financial and technical challenges. As a result, the church wasn't completed until 1722, almost a century after the commencement of the work. 3️⃣ Statue of St. Ignatius: Inside the church stands a large statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. What makes it interesting is that it was cast using enemy cannons captured after the victory in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, a significant event in St. Ignatius's life. 4️⃣ Burial of St. Robert Bellarmine: The church also houses the tomb of St. Robert Bellarmine, a prominent cardinal and Jesuit theologian of the 16th century. His tomb is an impressive sculpture depicting Bellarmine in the form of a skeleton, a humble reminder of human mortality. 5️⃣ Ignatian Library: The church is adjacent to the Ignatian Library, which hosts an extensive collection of texts and historical documents related to the Jesuit order, theology, and ecclesiastical history. The library was founded in the 18th century and is still operational. #artoftiktok #visititaly #visual #artviral #aesthetic #roma #arte #artetiktok
