We used to pull out the window A/C every summer, but honestly, we haven’t used it in years. So how do we survive a Georgia summer without melting? First, location matters. We live in the woods, and that tree shade is everything. The same 95°F in town feels 10° cooler out here because there’s no concrete, glass, or cars trapping heat. If you’re in a city or suburb, try planting fast-growing shade trees around your house. It makes a huge difference long term. Second, airflow. We use Vornado fans instead of regular ones. They circulate air through the room instead of just blasting it in one spot, and they’re energy efficient. Good for solar setups or anyone trying to save power. Third, cross breeze setup. We designed our house so air can move through from front to back and side to side. Open windows opposite each other so wind can actually pass through instead of getting trapped. If you only have one window, use a fan to pull air out on one side and another to draw air in. Fourth, timing. Open windows early morning and late evening when temps drop. Close them and pull blinds by 9 a.m. to lock in that cool air. And finally, location bonus. We’re near a big lake, so we get natural breeze almost every day. If you’re near water, keep your windows facing that direction open when possible. And honestly, after a while your body adapts to the environment. What used to feel like dying heat doesn’t bother us that much anymore. Yeah, some summer days we still sweat, but we adjust, slow down, and adapt with nature.
