Historical maps from before the 16th century paint a clear picture. The Republic of Somaliland is labeled “Ardul Somal”, which is the Arabic name for Somali-land. while the below region is labeled “Ajan” or “Zinj .” These names reflected distinct cultural, linguistic, and territorial identities. Ajan-Zinj people with no historical link to the ‘Somali’ rebranded themselves as something they never were, then weaponized that stolen identity to erase the real and actual Somali nation: Ardul-Somal the Somaliland. Speaking Somali doesn’t make a person ethnically Somali.. just like speaking English doesn’t make me an English. The Ajan people in east Africa adopted the Somali language but have no ancestral link to Republic of Somaliland, where the identity, culture, and name ‘Somali’ actually originate. Language is not lineage.. and hijacking a name doesn’t rewrite history Yet, in the 19th century, something changed something artificial. Colonial Invention: The Birth of “Somaglia” The name “Somalia” did not originate in Africa. It was imposed by Italian fascists during their colonial occupation of Ajan in the early 1900s. The term itself is derived from Somaglia, a small town in Italy. In 1905, Italy officially labeled its East African colony “Somalia Italiana” and with that, the name took root. Before this colonial rebranding, no place in East Africa was called Somalia. There was Somaliland (modern day republic of Somaliland Ardul Somal) for centuries, existed before the colonial power touched down Africa. It later became internationally recognized sovereignty by 1960 and there was the Ajan – another entity, with its own distinct identity. Language Is Not Lineage The AjanZion entity eventually adopted the Somali language, with broken and inferior dialect but adopting a language does not make one part of that language’s native culture. It’s no different from how millions speak English today but have no ancestral connection to England. Speaking Somali doesn’t make you Somali just like speaking English doesn’t make you English. #somali #somalitiktok #fyp #somaliland #goviral
