@the_green_bird_brigade: One of THE most common questions I get about my birds is “Do they talk?” and the answer is, sort of. Gideon here has learned to mimic a pretty wide array of words, sounds, and phrases that he has heard. Of the 5 eclectus parrots I have had, he is by far the most talkative. One of them never talked at all and the rest could say a few words. Of the 9 birds I currently have, only Gideon and Griffin “talk” (meaning they mimic) but Griffin only says a couple of things. It is a lot less common for parrots to talk than I think most people realize. While several species do have the ability to mimic human speech quite well, most do not, and not every bird will want to speak even if it can. Many species may learn to mimic a few words or sounds, although it may be garbled, but most will not really “talk” at all. If having a bird that mimics speech is important to you, here are the species that TEND to mimic the best: African grey, amazon, eclectus, Indian ringneck, and budgies are some of the best talkers. It is also more common for the males of these species to mimic than the females, although (again) every bird is different and there are no guarantees that any bird will talk. You never really know. I think the main point here is not to choose a particular bird or species for its talking ability alone, because you may be disappointed.
