@greengoldandblues: I think one of the scariest things about today (even more than all the mini monsters running around the streets committing candy robberies) is how fast time is flying, because today marks and entire year since I took this video. One year ago today, I sat on the rim of the Grand Canyon with Thelma, looked out over the horizon…and felt absolutely nothing. 12 weeks earlier, I had packed everything I owned into my truck and trailer (including my 3 horses and Kit) and left the person who had gotten me to that point. In doing so, I had also left behind the place I’d called home since moving to the United States. It was scary, but it’s one of my proudest achievements. I can still vividly remember the feeling of standing on tge of the south rim, something I’d been working towards for 3 years, and feeling this overwhelming sense of emptiness. By that point, I’d been living in fight or flight mode for so long that I had nothing left. It’s taken a really long time to start feeling ok again; a lot longer than I ever anticipated. In fact it’s really only been the last 2-3 months that I’ve truly started to feel like my old self. What’s truly scary is just how many people I’ve spoken to that know exactly what this feels like and have their own stories. Looking back on videos from this day are always bittersweet. I can now feel that belated sense of pride, wonder and awe, because in reality this was one of the coolest things I’ve done with Thelma; but I’ll still always remember that feeling. This is a reminder that every single one of you is capable of far more than you could ever imagine, and that even though it may look like everyone around you has their shit together, it’s rarely the case. If you’re struggling, talk. Be that to a professional, a trusted friend or family member. It’s ok to wear a mask on Halloween, but hiding behind one year-round is exhausting.
