Imām al-Ḥaramayn al-Juwayn held to the Māturīdī — Ḥanafī position with regards to the issue of īmān. He was asked: “What is your position regarding the increase and decrease of īmān?” Imām al-Juwanyī responded: ❝If īmān is understood to mean taṣdīq (internal affirmation of truth in the heart), then one taṣdīq does not surpass another, just as one item of ʿilm is not superior to another. However, if īmān is interpreted as obedience (ṭāʿah) both inward in the heart and outward through actions, as al-Qalānisi inclined toward, then it is not far-fetched, on that understanding to assert that īmān increases with obedience and decreases with sin. Nonetheless, this is not the position we prefer.❞ • Kitāb al-Irshād, 308.
