Ireland’s Pirate Queen Road Trip Stops: Seeing these spots in person really helped bring Gráinne Mhaol / Grace O’Malley’s story to life for me. We need a movie or tv series about her ASAP, and if anyone needs a location scout give me a call. Westport: Murals of Gráinne Westport House has statues of her, she reportedly lived there and the owners are still her decedents. Achill Island: Atlantic Drive Loop, be sure to stop at Kildavnet Castle (Granuaile’s Tower) & Keem Bay for swim and sauna Clare Island: (Ferry Trip required! We brought bikes onboard to explore the island) Gráinne’s Tower House - her home base! Clare Island Abbey (one of her rumored burial sites, also the medieval wall paintings are not to be missed. No photography allowed so you’ve got to see them yourself.) Newport: Bronze Statue of Graniaile *Ships in this video are* El Galleon Andalucia While not exactly the style of ship Gráinne would have captained, this represents the same era of seafaring technology. She is recorded having raided this style of Spanish ship though! And traditional Galway boat (I don’t think I can say the name on here without the video being taken down but iykyk) races, look up Féile na mBád Regatta to see if a race lines up with your trip! Imagine a hybrid of these two types of vessel and you get an idea of what Pirate Queen Gráinne would have used in her reign. All the evidence points to her favoring light and fast boats to outrun her enemies, though they’d be much larger than the Galway boats used in racing today to hold more substantial cargo. Add this to your Ireland travel bucket list! ⛵️💚🏴‍☠️ #ireland #pirate #piratequeen #clewbay
